Population since 2011: Description

Population development is understood as the development of the population in a geographical unit over a given period of time. Population trends are informative from a historical, economic and sociological point of view, as they are a cross-sectional indicator resulting from a wide range of other developments. Austria's population is generally growing continuously, but this growth is unfairly distributed. While some districts and municipalities are largely stagnating or even shrinking, other formerly rural areas are developing into urban centres. Decisive for the development of the population are on the one hand the birth rate and on the other hand the attractiveness of a region. The attractiveness can be derived in particular from the economic situation, because jobs are essential for young people and families to settle. The outer districts of Vienna, for example, have experienced particularly high growth rates, as they have developed from formerly partly rural areas into real city centres. The opposite development can be observed throughout Austria in the countryside, where resettlement is considerable and formerly flourishing communities are gradually becoming obsolete. This development was particularly pronounced in the east of Austria, for example, on the former border to the Iron Curtain.
